Health Challenges and Organizing Yourself and Space

Mental, Emotional, Physical Wellness versus Mental, Emotional, Physical Illness is a positive way to talk about Mental Health Challenges. I also like to talk about the difference between mental health vs. emotional health vs. physical health because they all work together. Emotional Health is all about feelings, feeling balanced and whole, being happy and satisfied with life, and having a good mood. Mental Health is all about how your mind, thoughts and cognitive processes are working. Physical Health is all about how your body is operating and staying healthy and balanced.

The separation of Mental, Emotional illness vs. Physical illness has always confused me. Why are brain (mental health/emotional issues and physical health issues split into two categories? Psychiatry which started in the 1800’s stated that it was the “medical” treatment for “the mind”. Why didn’t medical treatment for the whole person, mind, body and spirit ensue? Isn’t your brain and your emotional self part of your body? I would think so.

At some point in the early 1800’s when Psychiatry, a new field started, anything to do with depression, psychosis, “odd or strange” behavior, personality traits, and communications started to fall under Psychiatry instead of going to the old family doctor. Many of these “odd or strange” behaviors may have been caused by Medical issues, childhood issues, trauma etc… but the person would be treated by a Mental Health Specialist or Psychiatrist versus a “regular doctor”. That may be when stigma increased and terms like “nervous breakdown”, “crazy”, “mental patient” and any other negative connotations about mental health challenges started growing and upsetting the actual care necessary for mental health. The other problem with the separation between medical and mental health care is that many mental and emotional health challenges have an organic and or medical cause, and that often was overlooked by Psychiatrists who wanted to find an emotional and or personal weakness as the cause. Many people die from having a Psychiatric diagnosis take over their treatment, when in fact the mental and emotional health issues were from a physical disorder. The ideal situation if one is having mental/emotional health issues is to have a Psychiatrist and a Physical Health Practitioner on one team. Often there is NO communication between the two disciplines causing lengthy and unsuccessful results.

Most people, though, who suffer from emotional, mental and or physical health challenges also may become disorganized, and have difficulty with motivation to clean and keep things organized. Emotional illness comes from having the mental state disrupted. Emotional illness can be from having the physical state disrupted. Sometimes emotional, mental and physical disruption is happening all at once, and then your self and space will be tremendously affected. Finding a team approach to help you get back to WELLNESS may be helpful, and put you back on track, so to speak, and on the fast train to recovery. Looking at old memories of hurt and pain, facing them and talking to a Licensed Therapist, examining your diet, exercise, addressing physical health issues, staying on a good medical/mental health regimen, and pulling all of your support and resources together is essential to recovery.

Finding out the source of why there is an emotional factor (negative and harsh feelings) would be the first step in addressing any self or space imbalance. Once you find out the source then the treatment can be organized so you can get organized and resume a balanced self and space.

If you are experiencing any mental, emotional and or physical issues, and you realize you want or require help, contact your insurance carrier and or any community resources in your area to address these issues immediately. You may want to contact a mental health consultant and or coach for guidance and resource coordination.

How to Determine the Kind of Policy You Need – Cheap Health Insurance Deal

Healthy insurance policy is an essential plan that everyone should think of while getting an insurance policy. With health coverage your health or medical care are taken care of upfront by your insurer. Even in ugly situations the policy has plans that help you in bad moments and it takes care of your unplanned expenses.

This policy comes with certain benefits. Their benefits include:

o The privilege of being treated by a professional and a health specialist, the best doctors and hospital notwithstanding the cost.
o When you get ill, you don’t bother about your expenses.
o No worries concerning your medical bills because your health plan covers the cost of your medical treatment.

When a health insurance plan is given to you, try to know what type of coverage is available. Try to know the benefits you will get, the reason for every payment and the rules that governs your health.

In every health insurance plan, there are rules you must abide to. It is best to know about the rules so that you will not make a wrong choice. For instance, there are plans that cover a person once in a year. You can find some facilities that are in the hospital that are not covered. These excluded facilities could turn out to be what you really need for your treatment.

Do you know you can get a health plan with wide coverage? There are coverage’s for outpatient visit, pregnancy and accidents. The excluded treatments in the plan are high risk conditions or pre-existing health conditions. A very good example is sickle cell anemia and cancer. A person with either of these ailments is in great need of health coverage. This coverage’s may not be included in the policy and that is why you need to make a proper plan for your health.

Where to Get Health Plan With Wide Coverage From A Trusted Insurance Provider?

Buying Affordable Medical Health Insurance and the Risks Involved

In thinking of our health, we always make sure that we get the best service that our money can afford and, with that, most, if not everyone, would look for affordable medical health insurance that can cover future medical needs such as hospitalization, check-ups and the like. However, with the proliferation of insurance companies at present, so does the danger in buying a substandard and pretentious insurance plan that would be more of a liability than an advantage. With the way things are, it is important for people to be more cautious in choosing and purchasing insurance plans.

Affordable medical health insurance, as it is, should be economically beneficial to those purchasing the plan without having to sacrifice the wide range of services that should be able to accommodate a person’s health needs. A comprehensive insurance plan should be able to cover regular operations up to moderate health cases. Of course, hospital check-ups with health specialists should also be included in the package.

So what makes purchasing a medical insurance risky? With all honesty, the promise of buying a good priced and all-inclusive health insurance at present time is relatively slim. What with the increasing number of insurance companies, almost all of them offer affordable medical health insurance plans that fit just about anyone’s budget. The question is: Will the plan they sell be able to cover all of your health needs the moment you require such services?

One more risk in buying insurance plans is that a good and fairly useful insurance in one state may just be useless in another. Two states may or may not have the same insurance policies and, thus, may or may not recognize an insurance that was availed from another state. The coverage of a medical health insurance plan in one state may have to be paid for when in a different state. Now, although this holds true for a lot of insurance plans, there are those that might cost you a bit more but are universally recognized, no matter which hospital you visit or which state you’re in.

Regardless of whether or not you are getting health insurance for yourself and/or for others, remember that it is important that you check for things that could otherwise make your purchase useless and uneconomical. Although there are affordable medical health insurance plans that might look light on the budget, it may not be a bad idea to get something that might cost a bit more, as long as you’re sure that it’ll benefit you in the long run.

Significance of Public Health for the Health Sector of Pakistan

Pakistan, as we all know is a developing country and we are currently going through lots of challenges and issues. These issues vary from terrorism, energy crisis and poverty to poorly developed education and health systems.

Health, which is the basic human right, has unfortunately not been our priority. This statement is supported by the fact that according to the World Health Organization 2013 statistics, the health system of our country is currently ranked as 122 out of 190 countries. This is a very alarming figure especially considering the fact that one of our neighboring countries Iran is ranked as 93 in the same list. This particular figure definitely draws our attention towards issues in the health sector which we are currently facing.

Firstly, we need to understand what is meant by health system. The health system does not only include hospitals and clinicians. It rather involves anything and everything which directly or indirectly affects the health of populations. The health system is composed of hospitals, environment, urban planning, food, nutrition and numerous other sectors which are directly or indirectly involved in determining the health of populations. What this means is the fact that by merely building new hospitals and producing more clinicians, we cannot make our health systems better. There has to be a multi-sectoral approach which needs to involve all the components of the health system.

The next and the most important factor to consider is that we need to reshape our current health system model. If we want to improve the health status of our population, we have to base our health system on the preventive approach rather than the curative approach, that is, we need to promote public health. The time has now come where we must come out of the downstream (clinician) approach and move towards upstream (public health) approach. This is the only way by which we can survive and can make the health status of our population better. We should reconsider and amend our current health policy and we will have to develop it on the model of public health. This is the need of the time and if we want to survive and compete with the world, we must follow the public health model instead of the clinician’s model.

At present, there are only a handful of institutes all across the country which offer professional studies in the field of preventive medicine. In order to produce skilled public health specialists, we need to have many academic institutes whose focus is solely on preventive medicine. The government should also support such institutes and provide appropriate funding to them, so that they can eventually become stable and sustainable. Thus the only way to make our health sector prosper is by working on public health. If this is not done on a priority basis and we are not able to shift our focus from clinicians model to public health model, it is feared that we will lag far behind as far as the health sector is concerned.

Know Your Dental Specialists – The Major Specializations in Dentistry

Dentistry is basically described as a branch of medicine concerned with the maintenance of the health of the teeth (and the mouth in general), though dentists also help with some facial and maxilla problems, the maxilla being the bones that form the jaws, which makes them part of the mouth by extension.

As with all major branches of medicine, there are some specializations in dentistry, practiced by the various dental specialists. It typically takes a further period of study and practical training (after basic dentistry training) for a dentist to graduate into a dental specialist in any one of the specialties in the field.

Categorized according to their specialties, the major dental specialists include endodontic specialists, dental pubic health specialists, pediatric dentistry specialists, orthodontic specialists, maxillofacial specialists, periodontic specialists and prosthodontic specialists. Let’s examine a few of these at some length.

As the name suggests, pediatric dental specialists specialize in dental and general oral health issues afflicting young children; which makes a rather difficult specialization keeping in mind the size of children’s dental features and children’s averseness to pain. Technical difficulties aside though, pediatric dentistry is one of the most rewarding specializations in dentistry, as few things can be more satisfying to a person with a real medical vocation than the restoration of a smile to the face of a child who was previously in pain.

Turning to maxillofacial specialists, these turn out to be the ones concerned with complications arising from the spread of dental infections to the jawbones (which unfortunately tend to be happen very often as people take dental illnesses very casually), as well as the treatment of genetic deformities in the maxilla (that is, those that people are born with) and which often put them at a great social disadvantage by deforming their looks.

Endodontic dental specialists deal with diseases affecting the dental pulp (the sort of diseases that are typically treated with the much dreaded root canal procedure). This is one of the commonest dental specialties, because by nature of their specialty, endodontic dental specialists are always in ‘great demand.’

Periodontic specialists have specialized knowledge about the structures that support the teeth (the gums and so on), and although relatively few and far apart, the services of periodontic dental specialists are much widely sought after, because the conditions they treat can be highly distressing to the people who happen to suffer them.

Prosthodontic specialists, on the other hand are highly specialized in the replacement of natural parts in the body with artificial biocompatible ones (prosthetics) which makes their services particularly invaluable to the people who happen to suffer from severe road crashes and other sorts of accidents that leave major parts in their mouths shattered and in need of replacement with prosthetics. Again, although relative few and few between, prosthodontic dental specialists are among the most sought after dental practitioners because the need they serve and the knowledge they come with makes them quite indispensable.

Encompassing knowledge from most other specialization are cosmetic dentistry practitioners, who apply their knowledge of dentistry in the improvement of their patient’s dental aesthetics, making them among the most widely sought after dental specialists in an increasingly image-conscious world.

Mental Health Nursing Jobs – Meeting the Challenges of Recovery

Mental health nursing jobs provide one of the most complex and demanding areas of nursing. With as many as one in three people suffering from some form of mental illness in their lifetimes, the need and demand for nurses who specialise in mental health is on the increase. With most people suffering from this illnesses being treated in the community they live in, many of these nursing jobs require the individual to travel. One of the key challenges for these nurses is to form a trusting relationship with the patient and their families, so that the correct care and support can be provided. As a result, one of the key competencies of nurses specialising in this work includes excellent interpersonal communication skills, with a compassionate personality and the ability to empathise with those suffering from such illnesses.

Those healthcare specialists who secure mental health nursing jobs require specific training to enable them to complete their responsibilities proficiently and productively. However, it is suggested that many people are attracted to these roles through personal experience of knowing someone close, perhaps a friend or family member, who has suffered from some form of mental illness. Experiencing the symptoms, effects and/or recovery process of those suffering from mental illness can provide a level of insight, understanding and empathy with users of these healthcare services. The ability to connect with those who are being treated and understand their needs is one of the most important steps in the road to recovery for suffers of this illness.

Those who are formally trained to work as mental health nurses are typically employed in psychiatric units in general hospitals and specialised psychiatric care facilities. Those who choose to work with mentally distressed people in the community are commonly coined community mental health nurses. The ability to connect with people and gain their trust is as important as their specialist level of knowledge in all types of mental health care, whether community or hospital based.

The proliferation of mental illness at the community and national level is creating an unprecedented level of demand for qualified mental health specialists. According to recent research conducted by The NHS Confederation, there is a considerable increase in the number of common mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. Furthermore, the report goes further to claim that the proportion of the English population meeting the criteria for one common mental disorder has increased from 15.5% in 1993 to 17.6% in 2007.

Calcium Supplements and Bone Health – Learn about Calcium Supplements

We all know that calcium is needed for healthy bones and teeth. If calcium deficiency in the body is neglected for many years, it may cause bone disease in old age which is also known as osteoporosis in medical terms, and many other complications.

Calcium supplements or tablets are normally recommended by doctors all over the world to overcome calcium deficiency. These tablets provide up to 40% of elementary calcium obtained from food materials and help in its absorption by the bones. Therefore, calcium supplements and bone health are closely related to each other.

Calcium is mainly found in our bones, teeth, blood and cells. Almost 98% of calcium found in our body is accumulated in the bones where it is needed for proper growth and development of the skeletal system. Teenagers are advised to drink a lot of milk because this is the time when their bones are formed and after a time stop growing in length. Milk is composed of natural substances that help in maximum absorption of calcium in the bones.

Calcium supplements and bone health can be connected by the fact that they not only help in overcoming the deficiency of calcium in the body, but also prevent many degenerative diseases related to the skeletal system including osteoporosis.

Our immune system is mainly responsible for maintaining the health of bones. However, as we age our immune systems becomes weak and do not perform at its maximum due to other health conditions. At this age, the importance of nutritional supplements for bone health is emphasized by doctors and health specialists. Liquid calcium supplements and those available in tablet form are equally efficient and provide many benefits in terms of overall health and well-being.

In addition to the above-mentioned degenerative diseases, calcium is also important for the prevention of depression in women, PMS, obesity, high cholesterol, cardiovascular disease, kidney stones, muscle cramps, other skeletal problems and colon cancer.

There are minimal or no side effects of calcium supplements and are equally effective for adults and children. Try to find the ones made from calcium carbonate or more specifically coral calcium because it reduces acidity in the stomach and easily gets absorbed in the bloodstream if taken right after meals. Vitamin D helps in better absorption of calcium; therefore try to look for supplements that contain certain vitamins and minerals such as magnesium in addition to adequate quantities of calcium carbonate or calcium citrate.

For optimal bone health, we have been using a special natural calcium formula and for good reason, this formula is known as Bone Protect [http://www.optimal-bone-health.com]. We have personally been using this formula for over 3 years with excellent health results.

Benefits with Calcium on Breast Health – Are There Any Benefits with Calcium on Breast Health?

It has recently been discovered that calcium helps in the fight against breast cancer, and therefore, there are many benefits with calcium on breast health. Calcium and vitamin D both are required to decrease breast densities, consequently reducing the risk of breast cancer.

Women above the age of 40 are not only more likely to become victims of bone disease but also breast cancer. These diseases mainly occur due to nutrient deficiency, particularly calcium and magnesium deficiency. Benefits with calcium on breast health can be seen by consuming calcium supplements on a regular basis.

Postmenopausal women require up to 1500 mg of calcium daily. With this amount, they should also consume adequate quantities of vitamin D to help in maximum absorption of calcium by the bloodstream. Studies have shown that women who eat a balanced diet with at least 1000 mg of calcium and more than 100 IU of vitamin D are at a reduced risk of developing breast cancer, osteoporosis, prolonged depression and PMS.

Calcium is important for maintaining overall health as it contributes to making the immune system strong. It is also required by many other systems of the body to carry out various activities including absorption of other nutrients and proper digestion of food.

If nutrients are not readily absorbed they are useless and are lost through urine. In order to obtain maximum benefits with calcium on breast health, a proper diet along with calcium supplements and regular exercise is necessary. Try to find good-quality calcium supplements available on the market. These supplements are effective and help in overcoming calcium deficiency and also serve to cure many serious complications.

Abnormally low as well as abnormally high levels of calcium in the blood are dangerous for health. Sometimes excess calcium deposits are formed in parts where it is not needed such as tissues in the breasts. This excessive calcium should be controlled by eating a diet composed of all important minerals and vitamins. Inactivity or hyperactivity of the parathyroid glands also causes calcium levels to shoot up.

Always use calcium supplements that have been approved by health specialists and doctors all over the world. If some side effects occur, immediately stop the course of calcium tablets and consult a doctor. Do not consume more than 2500 mg of calcium on a daily basis. Try to divide the dosage into many parts and make a habit of taking calcium tablets right after meals.

For optimal bone and joint health, we have been using a special natural calcium formula and for good reason, this formula is known as Bone Protect [http://www.optimal-bone-health.com] We have personally been using this formula for over 3 years with excellent health results.

How to Save Money and Get Discount Long Term Health Care in Oregon

According to a study published in U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT, one out of every two people in Oregon over the age of 65 will need some form of long term health care. That same report went on to say that Medicare pays almost nothing toward long term care.

When you also factor in that today more and more younger people, through either accident or illness, are finding themselves in need of one form of long term care or another it becomes painfully obvious that the need for discount long term health care in Oregon has never been greater.

What exactly do we mean by long term health care? What exactly does it cover?

Well, if you become ill or suffer an accident that requires any type of special assistance with your daily living needs, such as dressing, bathing, preparing food, eating, or going to the toilet, then you are in need of long term care. Long term care can last a few days, a few weeks, or it can last for years.

The most obvious and perhaps most visible form of long term health care is a nursing home, but many patients requiring long term care live at home and require the services of an in-home health specialist on a daily or less frequent basis.

Long term health care can be expensive. Without discount long term health care insurance most families cannot afford the care with only their own resources.

The good new is, there are 42 companies in Oregon that provide long term health care insurance. The bad news is, for many people the cost of such insurance is a severe financial strain. What are some things you can do to lessen the cost of the monthly premiums on a long term health care insurance policy.

If you are still fairly young (as young as 40) and healthy, then now would be an excellent time to look into a long term health care policy. Why? Because the younger you are when you take out your policy, the less expensive the policy will be. Look at policies which have an inflation adjustment built in, or by the time you need your coverage it could be woefully inadequate.

Get on line and find an insurance site that will let you do a side by side comparison of as many of the 42 companies offering long term health care in Oregon as you can. Factor in different deductibles, different lifetime payment caps, and the different types of assistance that are available until you find a plan that you are both happy with and that you can afford.

Do not allow yourself to believe that Medicare will take care of your long term health needs once you reach 65, because the sad truth is that Medicare pays virtually nothing toward any form of long term health care.

Occupational Health – Workplace Health Management

Workplace Health Management (WHM) There are four key components of workplace health management:

Occupational Health and Safety
Workplace Health Promotion
Social and lifestyle determinants of health
Environmental Health Management

In the past policy was frequently driven solely by compliance with legislation. In the new approach to workplace health management, policy development is driven by both legislative requirements and by health targets set on a voluntary basis by the working community within each industry. In order to be effective Workplace Health Management needs to be based on knowledge, experience and practice accumulated in three disciplines: occupational health, workplace health promotion and environmental health. It is important to see WHM as a process not only for continuous improvement and health gain within the company, but also as framework for involvement between various agencies in the community. It offers a platform for co-operation between the local authorities and business leaders on community development through the improvement of public and environmental health.

The Healthy Workplace setting – a cornerstone of the Community Action Plan.

The Luxembourg Declaration of the European Union Network for Workplace Health Promotion defined WHP as the combined effort of employers, employees and society to improve the health and well-being of people at work

This can be achieved through a combination of:

Improving the work organization and the working environment
Promoting active participation of employees in health activities
Encouraging personal development

Workplace health promotion is seen in the EU network Luxembourg Declaration as a modern corporate strategy which aims at preventing ill-health at work and enhancing health promoting potential and well-being in the workforce. Documented benefits for workplace programs include decreased absenteeism, reduced cardiovascular risk, reduced health care claims, decreased staff turnover, decreased musculoskeletal injuries, increased productivity, increased organizational effectiveness and the potential of a return on investment.

However, many of these improvements require the sustained involvement of employees, employers and society in the activities required to make a difference. This is achieved through the empowerment of employees enabling them to make decisions about their own health. Occupational Health Advisors (OHA) are well placed to carry out needs assessment for health promotion initiatives with the working populations they serve, to prioritize these initiatives alongside other occupational health and safety initiatives which may be underway, and to coordinate the activities at the enterprise level to ensure that initiatives which are planned are delivered. In the past occupational health services have been involved in the assessment of fitness to work and in assessing levels of disability for insurance purposes for many years.

The concept of maintaining working ability, in the otherwise healthy working population, has been developed by some innovative occupational health services. In some cases these efforts have been developed in response to the growing challenge caused by the aging workforce and the ever-increasing cost of social security. OHA’s have often been at the forefront of these developments.

There is a need to develop further the focus of all occupational health services to include efforts to maintain work ability and to prevent non-occupational workplace preventable conditions by interventions at the workplace. This will require some occupational health services to become more pro-actively involved in workplace health promotion, without reducing the attention paid to preventing occupational accidents and diseases. OHA’s, with their close contact with employees, sometimes over many years, are in a good position to plan, deliver and evaluate health promotion and maintenance of work ability interventions at the workplace.

Health promotion at work has grown in importance over the last decade as employers and employees recognize the respective benefits. Working people spend about half of their non-sleeping day at work and this provides an ideal opportunity for employees to share and receive various health messages and for employers to create healthy working environments. The scope of health promotion depends upon the needs of each group.

Some of the most common health promotion activities are smoking reducing activities, healthy nutrition or physical exercise programs, prevention and abatement of drug and alcohol abuse.

However, health promotion may also be directed towards other social, cultural and environmental health determinants, if the people within the company consider that these factors are important for the improvement of their health, well-being and quality of life. In this case factors such as improving work organization, motivation, reducing stress and burnout, introducing flexible working hours, personal development plans and career enhancement may also help to contribute to overall health and well-being of the working community.

The Healthy Community setting In addition to occupational health and workplace health promotion there is also another important aspect to Workplace Health Management. It is related to the impact that each company may have on the surrounding ambient environment, and through pollutants or products or services provided to others, its impact on distant environments. Remember how far the effects of the Chernobyl Nuclear accident in 1986 affected whole neighbouring countries.

Although the environmental health impact of companies is controlled by different legislation to that which applies to Health and Safety at work, there is a strong relationship between safeguarding the working environment, improving work organization and working culture within the company, and its approach to environmental health management.

Many leading companies already combine occupational health and safety with environmental health management to optimally use the available human resources within the company and to avoid duplication of effort. Occupational health nurses can make a contribution towards environmental health management, particularly in those companies that do not employ environmental health specialists.
